What is play therapy

  • It is a method of helping children make sense of difficult life experiences or complex psychological issues through the activity of play.
  • Play is a natural way of communicating and essential for children to develop physically, emotionally and socially
  • Play can be used to establish a relationship when talking therapy is not effective.\

Who is it for?

  • Play therapy is generally employed with children aged 3 - 14 years
  • It can be used to alleviate mile, one off emotional or psychological problems that are preventing the child from achieving their full potential
  • It may be suitable for children who have experienced emotional pain and distress caused by abuse, trauma, neglect, domestic violence, family breakdown or bereavement.

How does it work?

  • A safe environment is created which allows the child to play with as few limits as possible, but as many as necessary to ensure safety
  • A variety of techniques are used according to the needs of the child, including music, dance and movement, creative art, sand, puppets and role play.
  • Children are supported to explore their emotional experiences and feelings at an intra-personal level, and so develop the capacity for enhanced emotional self-regulation
